A Few Words About Lawn Mowing Maintenance & Repair

0

Lawn Mower Maintenance

I have been in the lawn mowing industry for many years and am writing to share my experience on lawn mower maintenance and purchasing.

For my personal/home mower, I do the following things:

1) Change the oil and filter at least on time per season (I always carefully read the owner’s manual and follow the factories recommendations. At the very minimum, I change the oil and filter at least one time per season.)

2) Replace the factory blade with a mulching blade (I have had best results with a product called gator blade. By changing to a mulching blade, I have been able to eliminate the need for bagging grass and improve the look of my yard)

3) replace the spark plug at the beginning of each season (spark plugs generally cost less than two dollars and often make the lawn mower easier to start, especially if the old spark plug is very worn)

4) Check and clean the air filter every 3 cuts (a dirty air filter can damage your engine and make your mower much harder to start. I highly recommend checking and cleaning your air filter on a regular basis)

Lawn Mower Repair

If you are uncomfortable repairing your lawn mower yourself or have a complicated problem with your lawn mower, you should consult a professional who works on lawnmowers on a regular basis. You may find a professional by typing your cities name lawn mower repair into Google (for example, you may type, "Downers Grove Lawn Mower Repair" into Google).

Once you generate a list of people in your area who do Lawn Mower Repair, you should research the companies you find a bit to find out whether or not they are trustworthy and sufficiently knowledgeable to do the job. To do this, I often ask for the recommendations of my family, friends, and other people in the lawn mowing industry. Often times, personal recommendations are a great way to find a trustworthy business.

Furthermore, once you find a professional that you want to take your lawn mower to, I strongly recommend getting a clear estimate for the price to complete the work before authorizing them to fix your machine. Often times, repairs can exceed the value of a lawn mower and it makes more sense, economically, and it makes more sense to dump an old lawn mower than it does to invest a $150 dollars into an old one.

In the case your lawn mower is old and not worth fixing, I strongly recommend investing either in a Honda Self Propelled Lawn Mower or Toro Personal Pace.

In my opinion, Hondas are the best lawn mower for someone that is willing to pay $400-$500 in order to get a great machine that lasts a long time. However, if you have a smaller budget, $250-$400, I strongly recommend the Toro Personal Pace because it is very reliable, well built, and features a very unique self propelled system that makes it very easy to use.

The personal pace system actually varies its speed based on how hard you push, the harder you push, the faster it goes. I have owned several Hondas and several Toros and recommend both to my family and friends depending on their budget and unique needs. Mtd Snow Blowers: The Power To Get The Snow Blower You Need

0

MTD snow blowers make up one of the most highly respected collections of snow blowers. MTD is the legendary name behind several top brands that manufacture high-quality snow blowers. Operating under the MTD company are brands such as Troy Bilt, Yard Machines, and Yard Man. MTD was founded in 1932 and used to focus primarily on supplying tools to the manufacturing industry. But as the company prospered, they eventually expanded their product offers, focusing mainly on outdoor yard equipments. Back in 1958, the company was finally able to release its first own lawnmower. Now, MTD is operating on a global scale and is very popular as a provider of outdoor power equipment under several brands. Aside from the three previously mentioned, MTD is also behind brands such as Cub Cadet, Bolens, White Outdoor, and McCulloch.

Troy Bilt Snow Blowers from MTD

Troy Bilt is currently one of the strongest brands operating under MTD. Through Troy Bilt, MTD offers high-class and top-quality snow blowers with a full range of features. Though some Troy Bilt models tend to be expensive, the models under this brand are definitely to be trusted to do various levels of snow clearing work. Whatever form and size your snow problem may be in, you can be sure to trust Troy Bilt.

One popular Troy Bilt snow blower model is the Storm Tracker 2690 Deluxe Two-Stage Snow Thrower, a powerful snow machine with a 26-inch clearing path. It comes with a 208cc 4-cycle OHV engine, a Touch ‘n Turn Power Steering system, a push-button electric start, single-hand operation, 3 SelecTrac drive modes, a 4.5" x 10" Snow Track Drive, 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds, a 21" intake height, a 4-way joystick chute control, a 12" serrated steel auger, adjustable skid shoes, in-dash headlights, and heated handles.

Yard-Man Snow Blowers from MTD

MTD snow blowers manufactured and marketed under the Yard-Man brand are some of the most popular snow blowers around. One of the best things about snow blowers from Yard-Man is that they are easily accessible and are widely available online. There is also a wide range of various Yard-Man snow blowers in the market, allowing people to choose among several choices. Yard-Man machines are also known for the great value they offer at great prices. Their main focus is to provide excellent-grade snow blowers affordably. Check out the 31AS2B5-801 Single-Stage Snow Thrower with Electric Start, which comes fully assembled with a 5-HP 4-cycle Tecumseh engine for reliable and quiet operation. Other features include a push-button electric start, a 21-inch clearing width, an 11-inch intake height, reversible and replaceable scraper blades, and rubber-edged augers.

Yard Machines Snow Blowers from MTD

Yard machines are one of the most widely available types of snow blowers in the market. Their snow blowers are also quite affordable, with some two-stage models at only around $700 and one-stage models at only $400, compared to the soaring prices of snow blowers from other brands. The good thing is that the lower price does not affect the quality you get in exchange. One of the most affordable two-stage snow blowers from Yard Machines, at only $699, is the Yard Machines 179cc Gas Self-Propelled Two-Stage Snow Thrower with Electric Start. The model is equipped with a 179cc OHV 4-cycle has engine and 13"x4" Snow Hog tires for good traction. It has a 24-inch clearing width, 21-inch intake height, and 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds.

Pros: Troy Bilt snow blowers offer top-class features and functionality; Yard-Man snow blowers are affordable and reliable; Yard Machines offer one of the biggest collections of snow blowers.

Cons: Troy Bilt snow blowers may be a bit expensive.

The Verdict: MTD snow blowers can be trusted to do the required task. It does not matter whether you go for a Troy Bilt, a Yard-Man, or a Yard Machines snow blower. The MTD quality applies to all these brands.

Honda Snowblowers: It All Comes Down to Quality

0

Honda snowblowers are powerful workers, as are all other products from Honda. Honda is one of the biggest names in the automobile and electrical manufacturing industry. The company is a top provider of automobiles, motorcycles, and outdoor power equipment. The company currently has a wide array of generators, lawnmowers, pumps, tillers, trimmers, snow blowers, and accessories for these same products.

A Closer Look at Honda Snowblowers

Honda snowblowers are impressively loaded with a wide array of breakthrough features that can deliver superior snow clearing performance whatever snow conditions you may be faced with. Honda currently offers four series of snow blowers, ranging from lightweight basic models to heavy and powerful snow workers. These snow blowers can tackle anywhere from light snow to even the heaviest snow level. The important thing is to find the best model for your snow profile. If your snow clearing needs are quite basic, single-stage Honda snowblowers will do the trick. Honda single-stage models are lightweight, easy to operate, easy to store, and can handle mild to moderate snow coverage with no problem at all. If you have bigger snow clearing needs, the two-stage snow blowers may be what you need. These heavy-duty snow blowers are still flexible and adjustable but are designed to plow through the heaviest snow coverage thanks to the common serrated augers featured in all the two-stage models. Honda now offers ten different models under these series, with all models meeting CARB and EPA emission requirements.

Honda HS520A and HS520AS: Size Does Not Matter

The HS520A is a basic single-stage snow thrower from Honda. It comes in a lightweight and compact design that's easy to store and to maneuver. It has a 20-inch clearing with and can throw snow up to 26 feet away. It comes with a powerful 4-stroke Honda OHC engine that can start easily and tackle the job at hand with ease. The HS520AS is the electric start version of the same model with an additional 120-Volt AC electric starter. Both units come with semi-self-propelled auger drive systems and have the capacity to clear up to 50 tons of snow in an hour.

Honda Two-Stage Snow Blowers: Get the Heavy Work Done

Honda two-stage snow blowers are around to help you get heavy snow out of the way. One of their models is the HS724WA, a self-propelled snow machine with an infinitely variable hydrostatic drive. It is equipped with an easy-start Honda OHV commercial-grade engine. The machine can clear up to 46.3 tons of snow per hour with its 24" inch clearing width and 20" clearing height per pass. Another model is the HS724TA, which has the same features but adds a special Track drive that provides better traction and an additional pedal-adjustable auger height. It can clear up to 50.7 tons of snow per hour. If you want something with a higher capacity, check out the HS928WA, which has a 28" clearing width, a 20" clearing height, and can clear up to 55 tons of snow per hour. This model also comes with a 120-volt AC electric starter. This model is similar to the HS928TA, but the latter does not have an electric starter.

For heavier work, you may want to check out the HS1132TA, which has the same range of features but comes with a work light standard, can clear 32-inch wide paths and 20-inch high snow depths, and can throw up to 71 tons of snow per hour. This model also comes in a variant that has the similar features but with an added electric starter.

Pros: Powerful and reliable Honda engines, electric starters, excellent snow-clearing capacity.

Cons: Some models are quite expensive, and the models are fairly simple and do not has as many features as other models from other brands.

The Verdict

Honda snowblowers are powerful workers that give consumers and prosumers single-stage and two-stage options for snow clearing needs. Whatever type you go for, a Honda would offer you quality.

Standby Generator? How a Standby Generator Can Keep You Out of Cold When The Power Goes Out

0

As you're going to learn, in the event of a power outage, a standby generator is your best choice.

When a person first hears about backup generators, emergency generators and dealing with power outages, invariably they usually only hear about portable generators. To be fair, portable generators are a lifesaver. If they were the only choice, there would be no reason whatsoever for me to address this issue, but there is another choice.

Before generators became popular, I was using portable generators as backup power and to provide power at the numerous sporting events, camping excursions, family outings and outdoor events. Needless to say, they make life easier.

However, the difference between a portable generator and a standby generator is a major one. If you have a portable generator and the power goes out, there is a sequence of steps that you must take before your portable generator can provide you with power.

Step one; you have to retrieve the generator from storage.

Step two; you have to connect extension cords to the generator and then to the appliances you want to power.

Step three; you have to insure that you have enough fuel and oil.

Step four; you have to start the generator. Unless your unit has a special automatic start feature, you will have pull start it just like you start a pull start lawnmower. Imagine having to do all that in the middle of an ice storm?

During a power outage, with a standby generator you have DO NOT have to go outside and set the unit up. Standby generators are permanently installed. You DO NOT have to manually start a standby generator; the unit has sensors designed to detect power outages and then an automatic transfer switch switches on your standby generator. The operation is so seamless; you'll hardly notice it.

If you use propane as your fuel source, you could literally give your standby generator five to eleven days or more of backup power. Just think about the advantages of a standby generator. In the event of a power outage, you don't have to go outside to set the unit up or start it. If your unit is fueled by propane or natural gas, you'll never be caught off guard due to a lack of gasoline or diesel fuel. In outages caused by inclement weather such as the ice storm, it seems as though one of the first things to go is gasoline stations.

The problem is, people who have gasoline and diesel fueled generators are now forced to drive around town desperately trying to find fuel. They essentially have to leave their homes after they run out of fuel.

This is what makes the standby generator such an awesome invention.

Choosing the Right Hose Reel

0

Hose Reel Main Factors

The three main factors to remember when choosing a hose reel are the size, shape, and type of hose that you are using. If you use an industrial size hose for your watering needs than you need to make sure that your hose reel was built for an industrial size hose. When choosing a hose reel make sure you notice which hose lengths are compatible with the hose reel. A thirty foot hose will not fit on a hose reel with a maximum capacity of 25 feet, even though it seem like a trivial difference placing a hose that is too long on a hose reel will damage the hose. The last factor to think about is the size of the hose reel. If you are planning on mounting the hose reel on the wall make sure that the wall is strong enough to hold the hose reel and the hose when it is full of water.

Why Choose a Hose Reel?

Hoses and cables are prone to tangling and present a potential danger to children, animals, and lawnmowers when left laying out in the yard. Hose reels are a simple, safe, and effective method of storing, delivering, and retrieving hoses. Hose reels not only prevent accidents but they also help protect and improve the lifespan of the hose. It only takes one accident with a lawnmower to destroy a hose. When a hose is properly coiled on a hose reel it is also being protected from the sun which can bleach the hose and cause it to dry, crack, and leak.

Hose Reel Rewind

There are several types of hose reel winders manual, electric, and automatic. Manual hose reel cranks require a lot of effort to wind up a hose, especially when the hose is full of water. If you have ever picked up a blue 5gallon water jug than you know how heavy a large amount of water can be. Electric hose reels have a motor inside which rewinds the hose effort free. The major drawback to electric hose reels is that mixing water and electricity is never a good combination, also the motor has extra parts which can rust or break greatly shortening the life of the hose reel. The best and most recommended solution is an automatic hose reel. These hose reels use the power of water pressure to wind themselves up. There are no metal parts to rust, there is no danger from electricity, and it is a simple as flipping a switch.
